Git fatal: Fetch attempted without a local repo

This one is for you googlers out there. For me this error message was very misleading or non-informative if you will…

The reason turned to be: Too long directory path

Git outputs something like this:

...
Command Line: git submodule update --init --recursive
Cloning into ...
Submodule path '...': checked out '...'
Submodule '..' (https://github.com/xx/xx.git) registered for path 'xx/xx'
fatal: Fetch attempted without a local repo
Cloning into xx/xx...
Clone of 'https://github.com/xx/xx.git' into submodule path 'xx/xx' failed
Failed to recurse into submodule path 'xx/xx'
